The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange rose 22 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 17,580 in early trade, today, on selective buying by funds. But the Sensex later gave up all its initial gains, and stood 35 points, or 0.2 percent in negative territory, at 17,523 in afternoon deals, amid volatile trade, a short while ago. Key stock indices in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, South Korea and Taiwan were down by between 0.1 percent and 1 percent, after disappointing economic data from Japan.
