The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange fell 59 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 16,854 in opening trade, this morning, as investors booked profits after yesterday's gains. But later, selling pressure intensified, and the Sensex had lost 159 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 16,754 in afternoon deals, a short while ago.Other Asian bourses in Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea were up by between 0.1 percent and 0.6 percent, today, on hopes that Spain would use public funds to bolster its struggling banks.
