Sensex surges 46 points; closes at 17,098

The stock market today moved higher with a modest 46-point rise in the benchmark Sensex as the impact of a smart rally in Reliance Industries was minimised by selling pressure in other front line shares such as Bharti, Infosys and ICICI Bank. The BSE's 30-share key index ended the day at 17,098.33 points, a rise of 45.79 points or 0.27 per cent from last close. In the absence of any clear cues from markets in Asia and Europe, where bourses were seen trading on a flat note, investors here were seen consolidating their positions after a sharp post-Budget rally, which had lifted the Sensex to 17,000-level.Analysts said with little action in the economic and corporate worlds, investors are waiting in the sidelines for the right time to invest.
