Sensex surges 244 points to close at 28,504; Rupee appreciates 30 paise against dollar

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange surged 244 points, or 0.9 percent, to close at 28,504, ahead of the Reserve Bank's monetary policy review. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange gained 74 points, to 8,660. The rupee appreciated 30 paise, to 62.19 against the dollar, on dollar selling by banks and exporters, and rising equity markets. Gold rose 240 rupees, to an over one-month high of 27,250 rupees per ten grams in Delhi. Silver spurted 900 rupees, to 38,500 rupees per kilo. And Brent crude oil futures climbed above 56 dollars a barrel, while U.S. crude rose 1.49 dollars, to 50.63 dollars a barrel.
