Sensex sheds initial gains;still up 14 points in afternoon trade

Giving up most of its initial gains, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange stood 14 points, or 0.1 percent in positive territory, at 19,650, in afternoon trade, a short while ago. Earlier in the morning, however, the Sensex had opened with a good gain of 107 points, or 0.5 per cent, at 19,742, on sustained buying by funds and retail investors, amid firm regional bourses. The 30-share Sensex had climbed 168 points in the past two trading sessions.Stock markets in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia had gained between 0.1 percent and 1.7 percent, today, after economic data triggered optimism for the region's economies. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average had ended 0.4 per cent higher in yesterday's trade.
