Sensex sheds early gains, up by 83 points

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange rose 104 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 18,798 in opening trade, this morning, as investors continued to buy stocks, amid firm Asian bourses. Later, the Sensex pared its gains, but still stood 83 points, or 0.4 percent in the positive zone, at 18,776, in afternoon deals, a short while ago. The 30-share Sensex has already gained more than 1,145 points in the past five trading sessions. Other Asian markets in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan were up by between 0.3 percent and 1.7 percent on Thursday, after Greece moved a step closer toward avoiding a default by adopting harsh austerity measures. Wall Street's Dow Jones Industrial average had gained 0.6 per cent, overnight.
