Sensex recovers from early losses; Closes 113 points up

Fag-end buying helped the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange recover from early losses and close 113 points, or 0.6 percent higher, at 20,069, on the last day of monthly expiry in the derivatives segment, today.The Sensex had gained 158 points at the day's high, and lost 92 points at the day's low. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange rose 39 points, or 0.7 percent, to 6,030. But in the broader market, the BSE Midcap index declined 0.2 percent, while the Smallcap index managed to gain just 0.1 percent.Market breadth was positive on the BSE. Total turnover on the BSE's cash segment stood at 4,558 crore rupees.Among the BSE sectoral indices, the FMCG index was the biggest gainer, rising 1.4%. The Metal index and the Bankex added 0.8%, each; and the IT and Teck indices gained 0.2%, each. Among the sectoral losers, the Oil and Gas index fell 1.2%; the Consumer Durables index fell 0.9%; the Auto and the PSU indices slid 0.5%, each; and the Power index shed 0.3%. Index heavyweight Reliance Industries fell 1.2%.In FMCG stocks, Marico, ITC and Hindustan Unilever rose between 0.5% and 2.5%.Copper major, Sterlite Industries jumped 3% on bargain hunting after slumping 8.5%, yesterday. The stock had declined sharply yesterday after the Madras High Court ordered closure of the company's copper smelting plant at Tuticorin, after noting that the company has failed to comply with environmental issues.Among other metal stocks, Hindalco Industries, JSW Steel, Jindal Steel & Power and Jindal Saw rose by between 0.05% to 2.22%.In banking pivotals, HDFC Bank rose 1.4%, ICICI Bank rose 1%, and State Bank of India rose 0.6%, and the stock hit a record high of 3,268 rupees, today.Housing finance major, HDFC rose 3.2%.Maruti Suzuki rose 0.7% after its Chairman R.C. Bhargava said on Thursday that the company expects September 2010 vehicle sales to rise 32% Engineering and construction major, Larsen & Toubro rose 0.5%.
