Sensex recovers early losses; Gains 170 points in afternoon trade

Erasing all its initial losses, the Sensex at the Bombay stood a good 170 points or 1 percent in the positive zone, at 16,512 in afternoon trade, a short while ago, on emergence of buying at existing lower levels, amid firm Asian bourses. Earlier in the morning, however, the Sensex had opened 51 points, or 0.3 percent lower, at 16,291, as cautious investors resorted to profit-booking. Other Asian markets in China, Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore were up by between 0.5 percent and 4 percent, as investors were encouraged by signs of relative improvement in the Chinese economy.
