The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange fell 36 points to 16,845 in early trade, today, as funds and retail investors booked profits after recent gains, and amid weakness on the other Asian bourses. Later, the Sensex lost some more ground, and stood 73 points, or 0.4 percent in the red, at 16,807 in afternoon deals, a short while ago. The 30-share Sensex had gained over 210 points in the past two trading sessions. Key stock indices in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Indonesia were down by between 0.1 percent and 0.8 percent, today. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average had lost 0.6 per cent in yesterday's trade. Meanwhile, at the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee recovered from initial weakness, and was trading flat, at 55.68 rupees per dollar in late morning deals. Earlier, however, the rupee had opened weaker, at 55.75 rupees per dollar, compared to yesterday's closing level of 55.68 rupees per dollar.
