The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange declined 14 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 17,665 in early trade, today, as market participants slightly trimmed positions, amid mostly weak Asian bourses. Later, the Sensex lost some more ground, to stand 80 points, or 0.5 per cent in the red, at 17,598 in afternoon deals, a short while ago. Key stock indices in China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Indionesia and Singapore were largely lower, today. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average had ended 0.3 per cent lower in yesterday's trade. At the Inter-bank Foreign Exchange market, the rupee depreciated 19 paise, to 55.88 against the dollar, in early trade, today, on continued demand for the US currency. Month-end dollar demand from oil importers, a lower opening in the equity market, and the euro's weakness against the US dollar overseas put pressure on the rupee.
