Sensex in the red,down 49 points in afternoon trade

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange fell 21 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 18,772 in early trade, today, on sustained selling by funds, amid falling regional markets. Later, the Sensex lost some more ground, to stand 49 points, or 0.3 percent in the red, at 18,744 in afternoon trade, a short while ago. The Sensex had declined almost 780 points in the previous five trading sessions.Elsewhere in Asia, key stock indices in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, South Korea and Taiwan had dropped between 0.1 percent and 2.3 percent, today, on concerns over the financial crisis in Cyprus. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average had ended 0.6 per cent lower in yesterday's trade.
