Wiping out all its early gains, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange fell 172 points, or 0.9 percent, to 19,525, in afternoon trade, today. Stocks fell on profit-booking, and amid news of a slight rise in food inflation. Earlier in the morning, however, the Sensex had opened 75 points higher, on selective buying in blue- chips, amid firm regional bourses. Other stock markets in Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan were up by between 0.1 percent and 1.5 percent.
