The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange rose 52 points to 17,385 in early trade, this morning, in line with rising Asian bourses. But later, in afternoon deals, the Sensex gave up all its initial gains, to stand 40 points in negative territory, at 17,293 in volatile trade, a short while ago. Key stock indices in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore were up by between 0.3 percent and 1.9 percent, today, on better-than-expected demand for Italian sovereign debt. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average had gained 1.4 per cent, overnight.
