Sensex gains 83 points in afternoon trade

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange climbed 152 points, to regain the key 19,000 level, at 19,034, in early trade on Tuesday morning. But the benchmark index later pared its initial gains, to stand a more modest 83 points, or 0.4 percent in the green, at 18,965, a short while ago. The Sensex rose on renewed buying by investors, on impressive quarterly results by some leading companies, and positive global cues. Elsewhere in Asia, the key stock indices in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan were up by between 0.2 percent and 1 percent, today. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average had ended 0.5 per cent higher, on Monday.
