Sensex gains 78 points in afternoon trade

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange climbed 116 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 16,760 in early trade, today, on sustained buying by funds and retail investors, supported by falling inflation, and encouraging quarterly results by corporate. Afterwards, the Sensex pared some of it initial gains, to stand 78 points, or 0.5 percent in positive territory, at 16,722 in afternoon deals, a short while ago. Other Asian bourses in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Japan were up by between 0.3 percent and 1.5 percent, today, on strong earnings, and positive jobs data from the US. Across on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average had gained 0.4 per cent, overnight.
