Sensex gains 71 points in afternoon deals

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange gained 124 points, or 0.6 per cent, to cross the 20,000 level, and trade at a fresh two-year high of 20,087 in early trade, today, on sustained buying by investors, amid firm global bourses. Later, after trimming some of its initial gains, the Sensex still stood 71 points, or 0.4 per cent in the green, at 20,035 in afternoon deals, a short while ago.Other Asian markets in Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea were up by between 0.3 percent and 2.2 percent, today, after economic reports in the US and China beat estimates. Wall Street's Dow Jones Industrial Average had gained 0.6 percent in yesterday's trade.
