Sensex gains 60 points in afternoon trade

Recovering from initial losses, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange had gained 60 points, or 0.3 percent, to stand at 19,961 in afternoon trade, a short while ago. But earlier in the morning, the Sensex had declined 118 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 19,783, dragged down mainly by banking stocks, and weak Asian bourses. Key stock indices in Japan, China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea had lost between 0.1 percent and 0.9 percent, today. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average had ended 0.3 per cent lower in yesterday's trade.
