Sensex gains 53 points in afternoon trade

Paring its initial gains, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange stood 53 points, or 0.3 percent in positive territory, at 20,746 in afternoon trade, a short while ago. Earlier in the morning, the Sensex had advanced 80 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 20,773, on selective buying by investors. The 30-share Sensex had lost over 480 points in the previous five trading sessions. Stock markets in Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Indonesia were trading mixed, today, even as the International Monetary Fund said it will raise its global economic growth forecast, and as the US trade deficit narrowed. Wall Street's Dow Jones Industrial Average had ended 0.6 per cent higher in yesterday's trade.
