The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange got off to a modestly positive start on the first trading day of the New Year, gaining 52 points, or 0.3 percent, to 20,561, today. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange rose 23 points, or 0.4 percent, to 6,158.
