Sensex gains 50 points in afternoon trade

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange gained 73 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 16,950 in opening trade, this morning, on fresh buying by funds and retail investors at prevailing lower levels. Later, after briefly slipping into the red, in very volatile trade, the Sensex recovered again, and stood 51 points, or 0.3 percent in positive territory, at 16,928 in afternoon deals, a short while ago. The 30-share Sensex has lost over 400 points in the past two trading sessions.Other Asian markets in Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Taiwan were modestly lower, today. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average had ended 0.8 per cent lower in yesterday's trade
