The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed with a modest gain of 34 points, or 0.2 percent, at 17,691, today. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange rose 3 points, to 5,366. Stock markets in Japan, China and Hong Kong added between 0.1 percent and 0.8 percent.
