Sensex gains 26 points in afternoon trade

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange opened 99 points, or 0.5 per cent higher, at 19,250 this morning, on sustained buying by funds. Later, after the announcement of the Reserve Bank's quarterly credit policy, the Sensex rallied further, gaining as much as 190 points at one stage. But the benchmark index afterwards pared most of its gains, to stand just 26 points, or 0.1 percent in the green, at 19,177, a short while ago. Other Asian markets in Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore and South Korea were up by between 0.1 percent and 2 percent, today. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average had gained 0.9 per cent, overnight.
