Sensex falls 174 points amid weak Asian markets

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange fell 174 points, or 1.1 percent, to 16,154 in opening trade, today, amid weak Asian markets. Falling further, the Sensex stood 226 points, or 1.4 percent in the red, at 16,101, a short while ago. The bourses in Japan, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore and South Korea were down by between 1 percent and 2.5 percent. The markets fell after the US central bank, yesterday, unexpectedly hiked the interest rate on emergency loans to banks.
