Sensex drops 571 points, Nifty below 17,200

At the stock markets, the Sensex and the Nifty today lost nearly one percent, each. At the forex market, the rupee weakened against the dollar. At the stock markets, after opening the week higher, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange erased all its gains, to decline 571 points, or 1 percent, to end at 57,292 today.

The Nifty dropped 169 points, or 1 percent, to 17,118. At the forex market, the rupee depreciated 32 paise against the dollar, to 76.12.

At the Multi-Commodity Exchange, gold futures for April delivery shed 31 rupees, to trade at 51,513 rupees per ten grams. But silver futures for May delivery gained 150 rupees, to trade at 68,172 rupees per kilo.

And Brent crude futures shoot up 3 dollars 40 cents, to trade at 111.33 dollars a barrel.
