Sensex down at 17,278 in volatile noon trade

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange stood 85 points, or 0.5 percent in negative territory, at 17,278 in very volatile afternoon trade, a short while ago, as investors tracked election results in five states. Earlier in the morning, the Sensex had lost 174 points, or 1 per cent, to 17,189 in opening trade. But it later rebounded, and had gained as much as 329 points at one stage, before gradually slipping into the red once again. Other Asian markets in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan were down by between 0.7 percent and 1.5 percent
