Sensex dips 188 pts

Snapping three days of gains, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange lost 188 points, or 1.1 percent, at 16,745, today, amid weakness in the Asian and European markets. The Sensex had lost 68 points at the day's high and declined 224 points at the day's low. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange fell 52 points, or 1 percent, to 5,032. In the broader market, the BSE Midcap index shed 0.3 percent, while the Small cap index ended flat. Market breadth was negative on the BSE. The BSE clocked a turnover of 2,279 crore rupees on its cash segment. Sector ally, on the BSE, the Capital Goods index was the leading loser, declining 2.2%. The Bankex and the Power index lost 1.2% each; the PSU and the Metal indices slipped about 1.1% each; the IT index fell 1%; the Healthcare and the FMCG indices shed 0.9%; the Oil and Gas index lost 0.8% and the Realty index slid 0.6%. Among advancing indices, the Auto index gained 0.3% and the Consumer Durable index added 0.8%.
