Sensex declines 244 pts, closes at 16,454

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange dropped 244 points, or 1.5 percent, to 16,454, pulled down by renewed interest rate concerns and weak global markets, today. The Sensex had lost 293 points at the day's low, and gained 47 points at the day's high. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange slipped 72 points, or 1.4 percent, to 4,943. In the broader market, the BSE Midcap index fell 0.6 percent, and the Small cap index shed 0.9 percent. Market breadth was weak on the BSE. The BSE clocked a turnover of 2,480 crore rupees on its cash segment.Sectorally, on the BSE, the Metal index was the leading loser, declining 2.7 percent. The Realty index fell 2.1%; the Bankex and the Auto index slipped about 1.8% each; the PSU and the Power indices slid 1.6%, each; the FMCG index shed 1.3%; the Capital Goods and the IT indices dropped 1.2%, each; the Oil and Gas index fell 0.7% and the Healthcare index shed 0.6%. The Consumer Durables index was the only gainer, rising 1%.Reliance Industries fell 0.2%. From the Sensex pack, Tata Power lost 2.9%, ITC and JP Associates fell 2.2% each.Shares of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group slumped. Reliance Infrastructure lost 7.3%, Reliance Capital plunged 13% and registered its 52-week low today, Reliance Power tumbled 3.6%, Reliance Communications lost 8%, Reliance Broadcast Network nose-dived 13%, and Reliance Media Works slid 5.5%.Among mining stocks, Coal India slumped 5.3% and was the top loser from the Sensex pack. Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation lost 4.7%. But, Private sector iron ore miner Sesa Goa gained 4%.In metals counters, Nalco, SAIL, Hindustan Zinc and Jindal Steel & Power declined between 0.2% and 3.8%. Tata Steel fell 4% and hit 52-week low in intraday trade. Sterlite lost 4.7% and also hit a 52 week low. Hindalco dropped 2.3%.Among Banking majors ICICI Bank declined 1.8%, HDFC Bank fell 1.2% and State Bank of India shed 2.2%. Bharti Airtel rose 0.4% and was the lone gainer from the Sensex pack.
