Failing to maintain its initial gains, the Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange had declined 221 points, or 1.1 percent, to 20,644 in afternoon trade, a short while ago. But earlier in morning trade, the Sensex had climbed 40 points, or 0.2 percent, to 20,905, on selective buying by funds. Stock markets in Japan, China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan had lost between 0.3 percent and 1.9 percent, today.
