The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange ended with a modest loss of 40 points, or 0.2 percent, at 17,839, after volatile trade, amid rising crude oil prices on Wednesday. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange slipped 9 points, or 0.2 percent, to 5,365. In Asia, stock markets in Hong Kong, Singapore, China and South Korea rose between 0.1 and 1.7 percent.
