Sensex closes at 17,540.29 down by 75 points

Amidst high volatile trade, the benchmark index at the Bombay Stock Exchange today closed at 17,540.29 losing 75.43 points. Heavy profit booking in the shares of technology, telecom, metal, oil and gas and select banking and financial companies pulled the markets down; while some buying was seen in the stocks of capital goods, power, pharma, realty and FMCG. DLF, Grasim and Sun Pharma were the top gainer, while Infosys, TCS and HDFC were the major losers. The Nifty too, ended in the red and closed at 5244.75, losing 18.35 points.The Midcap and Smallcap indices, however, closed with some marginal gains. The Midcap index closed at 6946.00, with a gain of 1.38 points. The Smallcap index closed at 8697.64, gaining 37.88 points.
