Sensex at 16,599 in afternoon deals

The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange rose 206 points in early trade, this morning, on renewed buying by funds, propelled by firm Asian bourses. Later, the Sensex gave up some of its initial gains, but still stood a good 147 points, or 0.9 percent in positive territory, at 16,599 in afternoon deals.Other Asian markets in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and South Korea climbed between 0.7 percent and 1.4 percent, today, after a capital injection by the Chinese central bank into the money markets, and after the IMF unveiled a plan to boost its lending resources to counter Europe's debt crisis. Over in the US, the US Dow Jones Industrial average had gained 0.8 per cent, overnight.
