Sense of two houses of Parliament on Anna's demands to be sent to Standing Committee

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh conveyed the sense of the two Houses of Parliament to Anna Hazare in a communication handed over to him by Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. Dr. Singh again appealed to Anna Hazare to call off his fast. He said, Parliament has also agreed that proceedings of the two Houses be sent to the Standing Committee which will go into these while making its recommendations on the Lokpal Bill. Winding up the debate in the Lok Sabha, the Leader of the House and Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said there is need for a change in the system to check corruption and government is doing so. He, however, said that one single law howsoever strong and empowered it may be, cannot completely eradicate corruption. Most of the members belonging to various political parties during the debate pledged support to these demands. Participating in the debate, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj while pledging full support to the three demands of Team Anna, called for bringing Prime Minister in its ambit with the exception of national security and public order and also advocated to bring a separate legislation for setting up of National Judicial Accountability Commission. Mrs. Swaraj said that the appointment of the Lokpal should be handled by a panel which is not dominated by government. Sandeep Dixit of the Congress supported the three points but pleaded that it may take some time to prepare the required mechanism for operationalisation of citizen charter. He also stressed the need for creating a separate mechanism to deal with malpractices in corporate sector and NGOs. In the Rajya Sabha, the Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley said that while framing the legislation, care should be taken so that there is no interference or overlapping of powers between the Centre and the States. Several members who participated in the debate in the two Houses criticised the media for reported one sided coverage of Anna's fast.
