A senior American official has arrived in Myanmar for talks with the military government and the pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The visit by the state department official Joseph Yun is the first from the Obama administration since the authorities in Myanmar released Ms. Suu Kyi from house arrest last month. It also follows elections, which the US has said were neither free nor fair. Analysts say Washington appears to be testing the water for greater engagement with Myanmar's military rulers. Earlier today, Aung San Suu Kyi bade farewell to her younger son Kim Aris, who had been visiting from Britain. It was the first time she had seen her son in 10 years.
