Senior Congress leader and Member of Rajya Sabha Haji Abdul Salam passed away at Imphal last night at around 8:30 PM after a brief illness. He was 69.<br/><br/>Born at Heibong Makhong in Thoubal district on March 01 1948, Abdul Salam completed MA (Political Science) and Bachelor of Law (LLB) from Gauhati University. The first Manipuri Muslim to be a member of Rajya Sabha from Manipur, he represented the Upper House since 2014.<br/><br/>Haji Abdul Salam is survived by his wife, son and five daughters.<br/><br/>A seasoned politician, he was elected to the 3rd, 6th and 8th Manipur Legislative Assembly from Wabagai Assembly Constituency. He also served as Minister and was once the Vice President of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee. <br/><br/>Vice President Mohd. Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have condoled the passing away of the Member of Parliament Abdul Salam. <br/><br/>Expressing her condolence, Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla said that "Haji Abdul Salam has dedicated his whole life for the development and welfare of the people of the State particularly the Muslim community of Manipur. <br/><br/>Condoling the sudden demise of Rajya Sabha MP, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh said that "Haji Abdul Salam was a man of great political vision who worked for the upliftment of poor and the downtrodden. Many people have also condoled the death of Haji Abdul Salam.<br/><br/>
