In Bangladesh Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, Senior leader of the main opposition party the Bangladesh Nationalist Party has been sent to 5 day police remand on Thursday by a Dhaka city court. The Magistrate issued the order when Mr. Chowdhury was produced in the court today by the Detective Branch of the police after arresting him on Thursday early morning in connection with a case filed in Ramna Police Station of the city for his alleged involvement in pre-hartal violence on June 26th this year which led to the death of one person. Mr. Chowdhury’s arrest comes barely a day after the War Crimes investigation agency filed a petition with the International crimes tribunal seeking an arrest warrant against him. The tribunal was set to hear the petition filed by the investigation agency on Sunday. The war crimes investigation agency had filed the petition seeking an order from the tribunal to detain Mr.Chowdhury for his alleged involvement in the killing of Nutan Chandra who was the founder of a famous herbal medicine factory on April 13, 1971 and many others during the Liberation War in 1971.Addressing a press conference in the party’s headquarters in Dhaka BNP secretary general Khandker Delwar Hossain criticised the arrest and urged international organisations to intervene and stop the alleged harassment and violation of human rights of the opposition party member.
