Selja urges states to assign prperty rights to slum dwellers

The Minister for Housing and Poverty alleviation Ms. Selja has urged the states to come on board and assign property rights to slum dwellers. She said in New Delhi that the centre will provide them all help to create slum-free India at the earliest. Ms. Selja said, a model regulatory bill for the real estate sector will be ready in about three months and once the model bill was in place, public pressure would mount on states for creating regulatory authority. Ms. Selja called for a major thrust in physical, financial and human infrastructure in cities to improve the lot of Urban poor. The minister also stressed the need for effective governance and technical capabilities to promote holistic and inclusive growth of urban areas. AIR correspondent adds, the urban population is set to double in the next 25 years to over 600 million.
