Self-styled Godman Rampal fails to appear before HC in contempt case

In Haryana, Sant Rampal once again failed to appear in the Punjab and Haryana High Court today defying non bailable arrest warrants issued against him. Punjab and Haryana High court had earlier directed the Haryana Government to produce Sant Rampal, if he fails to appear in the court today. Haryana DGP and Home Secretary appeared in the court in the morning and asked for a week’s time to arrest Sant Rampal citing the tense situation in Barwala of Hisar District where Rampal followers are constantly guarding the Ashram to avoid his arrest.

A division bench of High Court came down heavily on Haryana Government and police and directed them to produce Sant Rampal in the court till Friday.

Also, it sought its reply for withdrawing the security forces and police from Sant Rampal’s Satlok Ashram.
The counsel of Sant Rampal submitted a fresh medical certificate before the court that he was medically unfit to appear before the court. The court will deliver its order on the matter by 2 pm today.

This is the third time that Rampal has skipped appearing before the high court despite contempt proceedings against him. He failed to appear before court on November 5 and 10 also, citing medical reasons. Though security forces have been camping outside the Satlok Ashram but still could not make headway in the Ashram as Sant Rampal followers mostly women and children were guarding the main gate of Ashram.

As per the spokesman of Satlok Ashram, Sant Rampal has been shifted to a private hospital and was unable to appear in the court today due to his illness.

Meanwhile, the followers of Sant Rampal camping at Satlok Ashram have been asked to vacate the ashram immediately in view of the Punjab and Haryana High Court's fresh directions.

Hisar Deputy Commissioner, M. L. Kaushik has ordered police to arrest Sant Rampal and his followers and warned for creating any obstruction in the implementation of law. He has urged the the followers to peacefully leave Ashram.
