Self reliance in defence equipment production on anvil: Govt

The government today informed the Rajya Sabha that self reliance in defence equipment production is on the anvil. Replying to questions in the House, Defence minister A K Antony said at present 70 per cent defence equipment is being imported from other countries. He said keeping in view the potential of country's military preparedness, efforts are being made to diversify the vendor base for imports and indigenise through research and development and transfer of technology. Mr. Antony said procurement of defence equipment and platforms is made from various sources including foreign original equipment manufacturers as per requirements of the armed forces. He said, due to a hostile neighbourhood, there is a need to strengthen the armed forces. The minister said, DRDO has successfully developed many indigenous missiles. He added that government has approved 26 per cent FDI in defence production.
