Sedition law needs reconsideration, says Law Commission Chairman

Law Commission Chairman Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan says the sedition law needs reconsideration. He, however, asserted that the Commission will not jump to any conclusion before understanding the difficulties relating to section 124 A of the IPC dealing with sedition. <br/><br/>He said the panel will hear all the stakeholders and consult criminal lawyers before coming to any conclusion whether there is any need of change of definition. <br/><br/>Justice Chauhan said the priority for the Commission would be to come out with the report on comprehensive review of the criminal justice system which would include a relook at IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act.<br/><br/>Justice Chauhan said the government has given the Commission a list of issues for its consideration, including hate speech, live in relations, rights of victims and comprehensive review of the criminal justice system.<br/><br/>The recent arrest of JNU students union president on charges of sedition has triggered a debate on whether this law can be misused to crush freedom of expression.
