Sedition case: Former DU lecturer SAR Gilani granted bail

Former Delhi University lecturer SAR Gilani has been granted bail by a Delhi court in a sedition case. The court granted relief to Gilani yesterday on a personal bond of 50,000 rupees and one surety of the like amount.<br/><br/>Gilani was arrested for allegedly shouting anti-India slogans during a Press Club event held in Delhi on the 10th of last month.<br/><br/>Delhi Police had opposed the bail plea saying the event was an attack on the soul of India and it was contempt of court.<br/><br/>Gilani's counsel said, as per the Supreme Court order, shouting slogans merely doesn't amount to offence under section 124-A of IPC that deals with sedition.<br/><br/>On the 19th of last month, a magisterial court had dismissed Gilani's bail plea. Gilani was also arrested in connection with the 2001 Parliament attack case but was acquitted by the Delhi High Court in 2003 due to lack of evidence.
