Security has been tightened in Meghalaya ahead of the Independence Day celebration with the Border Security Force (BSF) keeping an extra-vigil along the Indo-Bangla border.The outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) militant outfit has called for a 17-hour general strike beginning midnight tomorrow to 1730 hours on August 15.
State Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh said the government has taken all necessary steps to ensure that there is no incident to the run-up to the Independence Day celebrations. Meghalaya police officials said the state police have also strengthened its security apparatus after receiving specific inputs on HNLC's plans to carry out its hit-and-run operations to disrupt the Independence Day celebrations. The Border Security Force (BSF) guarding the unfenced India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya has also sent additional reinforcement to the border.
