Security tightened in Germany after al-Qaeda threat

Security has been tightened across Germany after Al-Qaeda video messages threatened attacks if troops are not withdrawn from Afghanistan. The message warned of an impending attack within two weeks of the elections if troops are not withdrawn. Germany goes to the polls on Sunday but only one party, the Left, is in favour of an immediate pullout. A recent poll showed 55 per cent of Germans wanted a pullout. Germany has over 4,000 troops serving in Afghanistan, based in the north which has seen less violence as compared to other southern provinces.
