International Council for Red Cross (ICRC) has said that the first two months of this year have seen a dramatic deterioration in the security situation of Afghanistan. A press statement issued by country’s head of delegation, Reto Stocker said that opposition suicide bombings in public places and civilian casualties due to operations carried out by international military forces that have gone wrong, have all added to the sufferings of people. It said people tell them that they are caught in the middle of the conflict and they don’t know which way to turn. ICRC termed it as an untenable situation saying civilians must be protected from harm as much as possible. Meanwhile, an air strike by NATO-led forces killed two children as they were watering fields in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar province. Abdul Marjan, district chief of Chawki in Kunar said the boys had been working on irrigation channels before they were hit. A NATO spokesman said an air strike late yesterday targeted two suspected militants but added that they were looking into reports of civilian casualties. The deaths occurred days after tensions between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his Western backers were inflamed by the killing of nine children who were collecting firewood in the same province.
