The Defence Minister A. K. Antony described the security scenario in the country as critical and said that more high profile indigenous defence equipments were needed. Replying questions in the Rajya Sabha he said currently India manufactures 30 per cent of such equipment and depends on imports for the rest. He added the government wanted to become self-sufficient in defence production.The Minister asserted that India has faced technological denial but scientists have produced several critical equipments. Mr. Antony said procurement of defence equipment is made from various sources including foreign original equipment manufacturers as per requirements of the armed forces. He said DRDO has successfully developed many indigenous missiles. He added that government has approved 26 per cent FDI in defence production.
