Security placed on high alert in Assam in view of two-day PM visit

In Assam, security has been placed on high alert all over the State in view of the two-day visit of the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh at Guwahati, Jorhat and Sibsagar, beginning on Friday. According to official sources, the Prime Minister is scheduled to arrive at Borjhar airport on Friday afternoon and will attend a series of programmes at Guwahati. Dr. Singh will address the students and teachers of the Arya Vidyapeeth College immediately after his arrival at Guwahati. In the evening, the Prime Minister will give away the prestigious Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Award for National Integration to eminent journalist M. J Akbar and Gandhian Hem Bharali for the years- 2008 and 2009, respectively. Later, Dr. Singh will review the progress of implementation of flagship programmes of the UPA Government with the State Chief Minister Mr. Tarun Gogoi and his Cabinet colleagues at a meeting organized at Raj Bhavan.On Saturday, the Prime Minister will move to the Rampur village in Kamrup district for an on-the-spot study of the implementation of the multi-sectoral development programme launched by the Ministry of Minority Affairs. Later in the day, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stones of the National Institute of Design and the Petroleum Institute at Sibsagar and Jorhat in Upper Assam, respectively, before his departure to New Delhi.
