Security lockdown for Asian Games

Asian Games chiefs said today said they had locked down all venues to guarantee safety to athletes ahead of the opening of the event on Friday. Xu Ruisheng, deputy secretary general of Games organising Committee GAGOC, told reporters that organisers have mounted a sweeping security operation costing tens of millions of dollars for the Asiad including counter-terrorist and hostage rescue drills. He said the 53 competition venues and 17 independent training venues have been successfully locked down. When asked whether special plans were in place for events involving competition between Japanese and Chinese athletes in light of recent tensions between the two nations, he said security would be tailored to each event.Earlier, Ministry of Public Security said it had arrested more than 600 fugitives in Guangzhou, without providing further details.
