Security forces launch a massive hunt in Assam

In Assam, security forces have launched a massive hunt in the thick forest areas of Sonitpur district, bordering Arunachal Pradesh, to rescue the kidnapped train drivers of a goods train. Police said suspected National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants kidnapped the drivers of the goods train, bound for Bhalukpung in Arunachal Pradesh from Rangapara in Sonitpur district. A top N.F.Railway official said the train, with six railway staff, was carrying rice and other essentials from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) depot in Rangapara when the incident took place at around noon on Sunday. Four heavily-armed militants managed to board the train as it was moving at a slow speed due to hilly terrain. The extremists stopped the train near Gamani along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border at gun-point and abducted both the drivers. AIR Guwahati Correspondent reports that this was the first incident of kidnapping railway drivers in Assam. Meanwhile, railway employees have resorted to a wildcat strike and forced suspension of all goods and passenger trains running to Arunachal Pradesh.
