The security forces in Sri Lanka are leaving nothing to chance as the ICC World Cup cricket extravaganza gets underway at the Hambantota stadium on February 20.Sri Lanka’s Inspector General Mahinda Balasurya, said that the police will give maximum security to all – players, officials, VIPs and public and will be supported by the armed forces. Several agencies are included in providing security and will be supported by a team from Interpol to monitor ‘certain things.’The IG has been assigned the role of coordinating with all agencies. In the last three months security arrangements have been put in place and tested. Maj. Gen. (Retd) Lawrence Fernando, security chief, Sri Lanka Cricket Board, said that ICC has a security directorate and the three host countries have a separate directorate each. ‘We want to have an incident free world cup,’ he said.The security will be constantly reviewed by the country’s topmost police officer, Inspector General Mahinda Balasurya, to ensure there are no coordination problems and also to provide high level of security for all matches.
