Security arrangements worked out to ensure free and fair polls in Lanka

Less than a week ahead of the General election in Sri Lanka, security arrangements have been worked out to ensure free and fair polls.Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya said that 58,700 police personnel will be deployed for election duties while another 19,500 personnel from the three forces, Army, Air Force and Navy – will also assist the police for the April 8 General elections and the post election period.He said that the police are geared to face any situation during and after the election.The Police will also have 2,584 mobile units on patrol round the clock on the Election Day. Each unit will comprise three policemen and two personnel from the forces to ensure security for the voters.According to a report, candidates from 36 political parties and 306 Independent Groups are contesting at the forthcoming general elections.7,620 candidates are contesting in the forthcoming general elections.Meanwhile, a team of sixteen election monitoring officers from Asian Network for Free Election are in Sri Lanka to witness the election. The foreign election monitors are coming at the request of an NGO monitoring election, the PAFFREL.This group will be divided into eight groups and they will start the process of observation from April 04. This group will be particularly deployed in districts in the North and East of the island nation where some violence is likely to occur.
