Secretaries of key ministries today review the price situation of essential commodities

Secretaries of key ministries, including Agriculture and Consumer Affairs today reviewed the price situation of essential commodities in a meeting today in New Delhi. The meeting was convened by the Cabinet Secretariat. AIR correspondent quoting official sources reports that the issues like imposition of import duty on sugar, increase in its PDS prices figured prominently in the discussions . The meeting is being held in the backdrop of high prices of vegetables, especially onion, tomato and garlic. Meanwhile, an Empowered Group of Ministers on Food is likely to meet in New Delhi later in the day to review prices of essential commodities. The EGoM, is headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. The EGoM may also deliberate upon allocating additional quota of wheat and rice through Public Distribution System and open market sale scheme in order to provide relief to people from high food prices.
